PORT Phillip Bay needs a major new clean-up push akin to efforts in the 1970s and 1980s to save the Yarra River.

That’s the pitch from federal opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt, who has called for a 10-year plan to ”polish the gem in our own backyard” and make Port Phillip the cleanest urban waterway in the southern hemisphere by 2022.

His push comes as the Environment Protection Authority warns against swimming today at 13 bay beaches due to high bacteria levels following the weekend rain.
